Are you Struggling with Disordered Eating?

Is food or your weight always on your mind? Do you feel unable to separate your eating habits or weight from your emotional state?

Eating Disorders can Become Overwhelming

The struggle against disordered eating can often feel like it’s using all of your emotional and mental energy. No matter what you do, thoughts of food or weight are on your mind. It’s hard to find a break, even a brief moment when you’re not worried about your next meal or the number on the scale.

Maybe you’re feeling worn out from trying to compensate for the food you ate earlier in the day with uncomfortable habits like over-exercising, laxative use, or vomiting. Friends and family members might have expressed concern about changes in your behavior, leading you to feel like you have to hide your eating or purging behaviors.

There’s Many Reasons Someone Might be Struggling

Many individuals are fighting feelings of isolation and lack of control over the direction their lives or communities are taking. There’s simply too many questions and not enough answers.

It can be difficult to find connection and trust in a culture that’s so fractured. When these feelings become overwhelming, it’s natural to grasp for something that feels predictable and contained. For some, this means looking towards their eating or purging habits to gain a sense of stability and control in such uncertain times.

Others may have been heavily affected by cultural or family expectations related to body composition, weight, and appearance.

Sometimes knowing something needs to change is not enough.

The problem can feel too big, and you’re not even sure where to start. You might feel stuck in mental or behavioral loops that seem unending, like there’s no off-ramp. It’s common to hear those who struggle with disordered eating to feel trapped in unhelpful cycles that have become more harmful than helpful.

You might have reached out to loved ones for help, but they weren’t able to respond in an empathic or helpful way. When it feels like everything you’ve tried has failed, our trained team of counselors are here to support you in your Eating Disorder recovery.

Eating Disorder Therapy Can Help You Heal And Move Forward

In your sessions with an Eating Disorder therapist, we’ll work together to identify underlying beliefs and feelings that are contributing to the disordered eating and weight loss habits. Often, the problem is not just food itself. Instead, the Eating Disorder treatment will focus on what lies below the surface. We’ll examine childhood experiences, relationship patterns, beliefs about self and others, as well as other core experiences that are unique to you. Once some of those deeper themes become apparent, we’ll start taking small, achievable steps towards more balanced habits.

What Modalities do you Use in Eating Disorder Therapy?

Each person who experiences disordered eating is unique in their needs and the approach required to help them towards recovery. Our Eating Disorder therapist will explore what works for you! It’s also common for those who struggle with disordered eating to have a dual-diagnosis, such as OCD, PTSD, or GAD. No part of your experience should be ignored, and we’ll work to integrate the whole into your treatment.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – An evidence-based form of psychotherapy, CBT can help you develop healthier thoughts and perspectives related to your weight loss and body image.

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) – MI is a behavioral, strength-based approach that helps identify the current needs being met by the unhealthy behavior and collaborate on active steps towards recovery.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) - IFS works to build wholeness between the various subparts of your personality. It helps you build a better relationship with parts of yourself and with your emotions.
